Capturing such a huge milestone in your lives is so important, so you want to be sure that you are prepared for your big day!

Prior preparation ensures that everything can run as smoothly as possible and so that all of your wedding vendors on the same page, allowing you to capture beautiful images that you can look back on to remember what is absolutely going to be an amazing wedding day!

As a Wedding Photographer in Central West NSW, I have put together a few expert tips to ensure that you capture stunning wedding photography.

Tip #1 - Find an Amazing Wedding Photographer

This is absolutely the most important tip! You will be spending all day with your wedding photographer so you want to choose someone whose personality aligns with yours and who is willing to work with you to achieve photos to die for!

Initially, looking at your wedding photographers portfolio will give you an indication if their photography style aligns with your vision.

The next step is to contact them to get a feel for their personality and how they will operate on your wedding day! I like to have a phone or in-person conversation to get to know you both as a couple and get an idea of the style of wedding you are after! This is also a chance for you to get to know me!

Tip #2 - Meet with your Wedding Photographer before the wedding

As we progress towards your wedding date, I discuss with you both timelines and finer details and any amazing ideas you may have so that we are all on the same page to create magical images on your wedding day, whilst still ensuring that you are able to enjoy every single moment of your day!

As a wedding photographer I also like to catch up with all of my couples anywhere between a month and 1-2 weeks prior to your wedding to discuss any final details about your upcoming day, and of course to share in the excitement that this special day you have been planning for so long is nearly here!

Tip #3 - Communicate with your Photographer

My job as your wedding photographer is to capture your wedding day as it unfolds in beautiful imagery, whilst making you feel comfortable and ensuring that you have fun!

If there is something that you feel uncomfortable with, or are unsure about - please be sure to convey this message and we can do our best to work around it!

On the same note - trust your wedding photographers expertise and listen to their directions! They know the wedding process like the back of their hand and want to capture your story in all it's magical glory! Relax and enjoy yourselves and let your wedding photographer get creative to capture stunning images to remember this special day!

Tip #4 - Consider an Engagement Photoshoot

Getting engaged is the start of your love story and deserves to be captured! A bonus is that you get to work with your wedding photographer before your big day, especially if you are worried about the photography process!

I offer discounts to my couples for their engagement photoshoot if they also book me for their wedding (see my couples webpage for details)

Tip #5 - Consider having Golden Hour Bridal Portraits

Golden Hour Portraits is something that I recommend for everyone! For those new to photography, golden hour is the hour before sunset and there is absolutely no substitute in stunning wedding photography for fantastic light!

The magical light that only golden hour can bring to natural light wedding photography elevates an image from beautiful to absolutely stunning!

During our pre-planning wedding meeting, I discuss timelines with you and whether you would like your golden hour portraits to include the bridal party or not. On your wedding day, I coordinate with other wedding vendors to allow you to get away for golden hour portraits, and trust me, they are very used to this request!

So please don't skip this tip, as the magical results will speak for themselves!

Tip #6 - Allow Enough Time Between your Ceremony & Reception to Capture Bridal Portraits

I understand that you may not want to leave your guests for too long, but trust me, they are all completely capable of looking after themselves and of course, getting the party started!

Following your ceremony, you need to allow time for family portraits, bridal party portraits and of course, your bridal portraits. Timelines depend on the number of people involved, but a good rule of thumb is as follows (please also remember to add travel time!)

  • Ceremony - 30 minutes

  • Family Portraits - minimum 30 minutes - 45 minutes

  • Bridal Party Portraits plus Bridal Portraits - Up to 1.5 hours

Sunset is the cut-off time for bridal photos, so be sure to keep this in mind when setting your times. If you are getting married in summer, you may start the reception and then sneak off for sunset photos based on when the sun sets (your wedding photographer will be able to help discuss these timelines more accurately).

This ensures that you have plenty of time to capture these photos and also take in the moment - you are finally married, after all!

Tip #7 - Chat to Your Photographer about any Fun Ideas you May Have

Tip #8 - Don't forget to enjoy this amazing milestone in your life!

Relax and enjoy yourselves - I often ask couples to focus on each other rather than me!
